How we are supporting international programmes affected by COVID-19:

India

The Government of India ordered lockdown on the 24th March, limiting movement of the entire 1.3 billion population. With factories and workplaces shut down, millions of migrant workers and day labourers had to deal with immediate loss of income and food shortages. The government scheme to distribute food was only partially effective, causing thousands of migrant workers to walk hundreds of miles back to their native villages.

HOPE worldwide UK has so far sent an additional £10,000 to HOPE foundation in India to help beneficiaries of our programmes with COVID-19 relief and we would like to send more soon.

A gift of £11 feeds a family of five with essential food items for a week. Over half of the UK gift has gone to feed 100 of the poorest families at The Village of Hope, a village for leprosy sufferers in the north east of New Delhi.

HOPE worldwide UK also received a request from a programme in India that we had not supported before. The Home of Hope in Vasai provides housing for nine elderly ladies who were previously destitute and with no means of supporting themselves. The home relies on box collections in local shops, but the lockdown brought this source of income to an end. HOPE worldwide UK have provided emergency aid to keep the Home running and these elderly ladies off the streets.

Bangladesh

It has been a similar story in Bangladesh, a country heavily reliant on its ready-made garment industry. Thanks to our generous corporate donors, we have been able to distribute food to the families of children at the schools they support during lockdown. These are poor families, working in the garment industry who have had no means to provide food for their families since lockdown started.

We have also been able to support programmes in Zambia and Zimbabwe and will be updating this page with more details of how this has been spent as we receive them.
